Beautiful blossoms hang gracefully down from delicate, green-leaved foliage. The petals are similar in arrangement to pea flowers. A small, fast growing tropical tree, Sesbania grandiflora can grow up to 10 meters tall and is indigenous from Malaysia to North Australia. This tree loves hot, humid temperatures and plenty of water, but cannot tolerate snowy or cold weather. Perfect as a tropical, standard in zones 9+ (protected from frost), deck plant or greenhouse specimen.

Prior to sowing the seeds allow then to soak for 24-48 hours. This hard to find tree is amazingly quick growing to only about 20 Ft in height, with a straight trunk. Makes a great tree for smaller yards. Originally from Asia, Sesbania grandiflora, also known as vegetable hummingbird, agati or hummingbird tree, is a small tree in the genus Sesbania. It is highly ornamental and versatile. November-June it creates a floral canopy of rather large 3-4" distinctively curved, rose colored blooms. These flowers are absolutely gorgeous to see in person. Seedlings can bloom clusters in as little as 1.5 years even potted, and less then 4 Ft tall. It is frost tender and intolerant of long periods of cool temperatures. You may keep it potted and bring it indoors, and still get blooms. Also said to be flood tolerant. The flowers and leaves are edible and served up many different ways, even fried and dipped in butter. The bark, leaves, gum, and flowers are considered medicinal in many ways as well. Agati is a small erect quick-growing short-lived soft-wooded tree, growing up to 10 m tall. Bark is light gray, corky and deeply furrowed. Leaves are pinnate, 15–30 cm long, with 16–30 pairs of linear oblong leaflets. Flower racemes arise in leaf axils, 2-4 flowered, up to 6.5 cm long. Flowers, white to pink, are pendulous. Each flower is 7–9 cm long. Pods are 50–60 cm long. It is believed to have originated either in Sri Lanka or Southeast Asia and grows primarily in hot and humid areas of the world. The flowers of Agati are eaten as a vegetable in Southeast Asia. The young pods and leaves are also eaten.
